HEIDI WINN

CMHC Intern

Life can present many challenges and we all need help at times to navigate our many responsibilities, roles, and relationships; life’s transitions and new experiences; and even day-to-day stress and struggles. Whether you need help with these or any other challenges, we will collaborate and empower you to identify solutions you can and want to be committed to implementing in your life. In a safe, non-judgmental, compassionate place and space, you can work through whatever it is you are facing. Come as you are and be accepted for who you are and where you are. You are the expert on your life and history and are best equipped at dictating the process of becoming the person you want to be. Let’s work together to identify your strengths and how best to utilize them. My approach to counseling is both genuine and authentic and you can expect our time together to feel as though you are talking with a friend. Together we can challenge issues while identifying coping skills/strategies and solutions that will meet your unique needs. Ultimately, you will control the outcome of your journey!

KNOW YOUR THERAPIST

WHAT DID YOU GET YOUR DEGREE(S) IN AND WHERE FROM?

I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Marriage & Family Studies at Brigham Young University Idaho and am currently in the final stages of completing my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental
Health Counseling from Capella University.

SUMMARY OF PROFESSIONAL HISTORY

In the past decade, I have worked in school settings in a variety of Special Education areas. I have experience working with children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), and Developmental Delays.  I have had the privilege of helping to support the parents of these amazing kiddos as they learn to navigate the challenges their children face.  I have also worked with adults and youth via Family Life Coaching and taught youth (ages 12-18) resiliency skills to help empower them to be more resilient in their daily lives.  Previous experience working with a variety of populations and in various settings has driven my passion to explore the human experience from a variety of perspectives.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A THERAPIST?

I have always had a desire to help others and to be a friend to all I meet. Feeling misunderstood and told I was different in my early years contributed to my passion for inclusion for all. No one should feel alone, as if they are not enough, or that they don’t belong. The world has a need for everyone and every life matters. We all have something to contribute! I strive to help others identify, see, and embrace their unique gifts and talents and utilize them to be
their best self.

WHATS YOUR THERAPEUTIC APPROACH?

My approach to therapy is very person-centered in that I feel that every client is their own expert and has the ability to identify solutions that best suit their individual needs. I seek to empower
clients with skills and strategies that will aid in their discovery and utilization of personal strengths to overcome whatever it is that they feel is holding them back or preventing them from attaining happiness and discovering and embracing their best self.

WHAT KIND OF HOMEWORK OR ASSIGNMENTS DO YOU GIVE CLIENTS?

I know that the words “homework” and “assignments” never bring about great excitement for anyone! However, given the limited time we have together in session, I may at times give clients
small tasks to do in their everyday lives between our times meeting together. These tasks are meant to assist you in incorporating skills and strategies into your daily life that we have discussed while together. Don’t worry, they are not meant to be difficult or time-consuming!

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY FIRST SESSION WITH YOU?

There is no need to prepare or to feel anxious. Just be you when you come. I will accept you for who you are and for where you are. There is no judgment here! I will support and encourage you in this journey to the destination you determine. The outcome is entirely up to you!
