Kit Edvalson

CSW

EMDR, DBT, CBT, PCT

My style is relaxed, collaborative, and sprinkled with humor when it's helpful. I don't mask my personality and strive to create an environment where you can take off your mask as well. We'll celebrate your strengths, embrace your progress, tackle the hard stuff, and figure out what actually works for you. Therapy isn't about "fixing" you or making you more palatable for the people around you. It's about helping you build a life that feels more like your own.

TREATMENT APPROACH

Therapy with me isn't about checking boxes or following a rigid agenda. You bring your goals and your expertise on you; I'll bring curiosity, compassion, and a toolbox full of strategies. I primarily work from a person-centered approach, while weaving in ACT, DBT, somatic techniques, EMDR, and neurodiversity-affirming practices based on what fits you best. My therapy animals are often part of the process too, offering a little extra support when words are hard or nervous systems are getting in the way. At the end of the day, the approach to therapy matters, but the relationship matters even more. My goal is for you to leave each session feeling understood, supported, and a little bit less alone.

SUMMARY OF PROFESSIONAL HISTORY

I've worked as a therapist for nearly three years (including my internship). In that time I've worked in private practice and at a day treatment facility.

WHAT HAS SHAPED YOUR THERAPEUTIC APPROACH?

WHAT KIND OF HOMEWORK OR ASSIGNMENTS DO YOU GIVE CLIENTS?

I generally assign clients to try out the skills or changes we talked about in session, whether that's coping skills, an internal script, guided meditation, etc.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY FIRST SESSION WITH YOU?

There's no right or wrong way to show up for your first session. If you know exactly what you want or need, that's great. If all you know is that something isn't working, that's okay! We'll figure it out together. Our first session is less about diving into the deep end and more about getting to know each other, making sure we're a good fit, and beginning to understand what brought you here.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A THERAPIST?

My approach is person centered, trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, and relation-focused. I use a variety of evidence-based modalities to address the client's individual needs and empower them to tackle the challenges they've identified in their lives. I adjust the therapy session to meet the client's preferences whenever possible, offering options such as lighting changes, activities, utilizing walk-and-talk therapy, etc. Change happens when the client feels safe, empowered, and able to focus on the session, which sometimes requires a little creativity.

I didn't grow up dreaming of becoming a therapist. I wanted to help people build better lives, whether that meant working in child welfare, mentoring families, teaching new skills, or connecting people with resources they didn't know existed. Along the way, I discovered that therapy lets me do all of those things in one place. I love helping people better understand themselves, make sense of how their brains work, and find practical tools that actually fit their lives.
