EMILY VAN DUREN
MSW Intern
She/Her/Hers
Hi! I am glad you dropped by! My name is Emily Van Duren, and I am currently pursuing my Master of Social Work at the University of Utah. Prior to beginning my graduate studies, I earned my Bachelor of Social Work at Utah State University.
When I meet with new clients, I strive to see them as whole people. Each person is shaped by unique cultural, economic, social, physical, and biological factors. Viewing people through a holistic, person-in-environment perspective creates opportunities for deeper understanding and meaningful support.
I believe you are the expert on your own life. Every person brings their own experiences, perspectives, values, and ways they understand the world around them. My role is to listen, collaborate, and support you as you reach your goals.
I am committed to providing a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment where clients can safely navigate challenges, build their strengths, learn new skills, and feel empowered in their lives. I look forward to working alongside you on your journey.
MORE ABOUT EMILY
Pronouns: she/her/hers
I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), coping skill intervention, with a strength-based approach. My style is client-centered, focusing on individuals recognizing their strengths, and developing coping skills that clients can incorporate into their lives.
Each client is different, so molding therapy around the client's needs is necessary. I am also incorporating play-based therapy with younger clients.
I am passionate about community work, advocating for human rights, exploring different cultures and histories, being outdoors, and most of all building lasting relationships. I have lived in different states, spending roughly the last 15 years in Utah. I love the mountains! Hiking, gardening, learning new things, taking scenic photography, and spending time with family and friends are some of my favorite things to do.

SUMMARY OF PROFESSIONAL HISTORY
I earned my Bachelor of Social Work from Utah State University and am currently pursuing my Master of Social Work at the University of Utah.
I have always been drawn to helping others and advocating for those who need support. My passion for community work, human rights, and building meaningful relationships naturally led me to social work. I believe everyone deserves to be heard and to have someone in their corner, and becoming a therapist allows me to do that in the most direct and impactful way.
I have experience working in community-based settings and have spent time across multiple states before settling in Utah about 15 years ago. My background includes advocating for human rights, exploring different cultures and histories, and building relationships within diverse communities. I am now completing my MSW practicum at Family Solutions Counseling.
WHAT HAS SHAPED YOUR THERAPEUTIC APPROACH?
I may suggest activities or exercises between sessions that help you practice the coping skills we develop together. These are always collaborative — we will talk about what feels manageable and meaningful for you. The goal is to help you incorporate what we work on in session into your everyday life.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY FIRST SESSION WITH YOU?
Come as you are! There is no need to prepare anything specific. Our first session is about getting to know each other, understanding what brings you to therapy, and beginning to identify your goals. I want you to feel comfortable and heard from the very start.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A THERAPIST?
My approach has been shaped by my belief that every person has inherent strengths, even when life feels overwhelming. I have seen how recognizing those strengths and developing practical coping skills can transform someone's daily experience. My love for diverse cultures and histories has also taught me that healing looks different for everyone, so flexibility and client-centered care are central to how I work.
